Melasma
Melasma is a very common skin condition that causes irregular brown patches on the face, mostly in women between the ages of 20 to 45. Melasma usually affects several areas of the face, with the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose and upper lip being the most common.
Although the cause of Melasma is not known, several factors play a role. Sun exposure, the hormonal influences of pregnancy or birth control pills, and a family history/genetics are all known to be associated with Melasma. Darker skinned individuals are also more prone to this condition. Melasma can make otherwise beautiful skin look blotchy and uneven, leading to much frustration in those who have it.
Effective treatments for Melasma are available. Often a combination of therapies is used to achieve the best results. Melasma treatment is not “one size fits all” and must be individualized for each patient. Therefore, it’s recommended that Melasma treatment always be undertaken by an experienced physician.
